Politics Matter

“The effect of [a representative democracy is] to refine and enlarge the public views, by passing them through the medium of a chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of the nation.” -James Madison

Our representatives cannot hear the interests of the American people. In the Declaration of Independence the Founders wrote, that governments derive their “powers from the consent of the governed”. The consent of all Americans are not being heard, primarily due to the fact that not all Americans are making their consent known. Filled with hopelessness and cynicism; we whisper in our homes, at bars, and online. Because people think we are hopelessly divided and view the government as broken, they have become apathetic to maybe the only thing that matters- politics. We fail as a collective people to bring our voices to voting booths, town halls, etc.

Our government, from the local to federal level, has an enormous amount of influence on our lives. Our lives can and will get better, when we all engage in politics. It is time we amplify our voices. Dialogue between partisans will break down longstanding walls and whip our representatives to act.

It is time to rule ourselves by shouting instead of hopelessly whispering.
