“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.” -Theodore Roosevelt
The current partisan divide in which we live has made everyone a bit too sensitive. Many people are fervently against the opposing party holding any political office, while in complete support of their own party members holding office. These people are unpatriotic and foolish.
During the Bush II presidency, Democrats and liberals hurled horrible insults at him regarding his intelligence and involvement in a terrorist attack that killed thousands of Americans. During the Obama presidency, Republicans and conservatives attacked Obama by questioning his birth, religious affiliation, and love of his country. President Trump’s short time in office has seen its fair share of criticism from teasing about his hair to attacking his family and much more.
There are Trump supporters today blindly following and supporting everything he says and Tweets no matter what. This is largely because they feel their president is under attack from the Left. Those who oppose Trump seem to decry every comment and action by him as wickedly sexist or racist. One side calls for blind support of a man who does not deserve it, and the other side calls for blind opposition for a man who does not deserve it. Who’s right? NO ONE, except…
The Rough Rider had it right by calling those who call for blind support/opposition as “unpatriotic”. It is a disservice to one’s country because it is our civic duty to question our elected representatives and provide oversight. Despite what those slimy politicians say, we really are on one team and that team is not red or blue. As good American citizens we must stay informed, and be willing to condemn and applaud politicians.
Also interesting is Teddy’s use of the word “servile”. He calls it servile to demand no criticism or constant criticism of the President. The media (CNN, Fox, MSNBC, Breitbart, Vox, etc.) immediately pops into my head when I think of servile. This is because the media often shows a grotesque desire to please certain groups – whether that be for or against our President. Constant criticism of Trump will probably please MSNBC viewers, while constant support of Trump will most likely make Fox viewers happy. Either way this is a dangerous to our democracy because people become polarized. Moreover, all Americans and especially journalists should remember the wise words of President Roosevelt.
Stubbornness combined with ignorance has led to a great divide in American politics. True patriotism is thinking for yourself and keeping an open mind until you discover facts that allow you to formulate a fair opinion.
