Earlier this week I posted about John McCain not being the maverick everyone calls him. I wrote that he could secure his anointed title by voting against his party in favor of Obamacare.
Last night, Senator McCain voted against the GOP’s ‘skinny’ repeal of Obamacare and further secured his legacy.
This was the correct decision, and history will remember McCain as a common sense compassionate Republican. As he faces his own mortality and we continue to reflect on his career, the Arizona senator will be celebrated across the aisle and by most Americans as a maverick.
McCain’s decision is no doubt in direct conflict with Trump. Just last year presidential candidate Trump said, “[McCain’s] not a war hero … He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” And then a few months ago, the president said, “[McCain’s] been losing so long he doesn’t know how to win anymore”. Last night, John McCain won and got the last laugh.
A shout out goes to Republicans Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins who also voted against the GOP’s healthcare repeal in a bipartisan way. Those that voted against the repeal saved lives.
Now we must keep an eye on Congress as they work to amend Obamacare and move on to new legislation.
