33,000 Americans died in 2015 due to opioids according to the CDC. When the 2016 election was not focused on mudslinging and crazy conspiracies, the opioid crisis was often mentioned. And not just mentioned as another debate topic, but as a real danger to our country and a primary concern of many Americans.
Last week, President Trump declared the opioid crisis a national emergency. This is a big deal because the executive branch will now be able to allocate more money toward treatment efforts. It was a very good decision for three reasons:
- Sick people will receive help.
- Congress and Americans distracted by silly partisan squabble will be united because we agree on this issue. We want to help fix this problem effecting our families and communities, and those in Congress want to chalk this issue up as a win (for their damn never-ending campaigns).
- The White House may receive some increased stability and calmness as this is a win for Trump. Mainly because it helps him change the talking points away from his other dilemmas (N. Korea and the Russian investigation).
Government has the potential to do its job and help us, instead of making everything so partisan. These are the kind of actions our president and representatives should be taking. Kudos to Mr. Trump for this decision.
